Brachot, 2023

Brass, granite, 47 x 86 x 65 cm

Brachot (Blessings) was inspired by my own frustration and the disconnect I felt at not being able to perform the weekly lighting of the Shabbat candles in my home. Living in a dormitory with sensitive fire alarms and fines for breaking the rules made it unwise to perform this mitzvah (commandment).

The objects have been produced by hammering the brass which like collecting the stones was laborious and physically demanding. I wanted to channel frustration into the material through repetition. To create a sculpture about being disconnected from a ritual through a making process that was very much conscious and connected through physical sweat and blisters.
